Family Gatherings

MM and I have many families to see during our end of the year holidays, and typically those gatherings include a lot of food.  Lots and lots of food.

I can’t compete with my elder family members when it comes to the main and side dishes.  My grandmother and aunts make killer turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet corn (frozen from the height of harvest, and tastes like candy – there’s nothing like it!)… You name it, they’ve got it down.  My grandparents work to make chicken and noodles that is so good I’d rather have that than any turkey on Turkey Day.  My mom makes a taco dip appetizer that walks in the door, is instantly vacuumed up by a few of my cousins, then recreated rapidly to appease the rest of the family.  On the other side, MM’s side, P makes cheesy potatoes and rolls that I can’t decline, along with the other tasty Turkey Day fixin’s.

So, on this Thanksgiving Day Alter of Overeating, I offer…

Dessert.

I wish to be the seer of dessert.  🙂

Oh, there will be various pies offered to the Thanksgiving gods.  Bringing any kind of cake, well, it’s never been done, and I’m not sure how it would be received.  Therefore, I focus on cookies.

In years past, I have provided the classic Peanut Butter Blossom.  You know, the peanut butter cookie, rolled in sugar and topped, while warm, with a Hershey’s Kiss.  Those go over like gangbusters.  I’ve also brought Chewy Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookies, along with the PB Blossoms.

This year…  I’m changing it up again.  Sure, I’m bringing the lovely Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookies – I can’t get enough of them myself, and it gives me a really, really good reason to make and, let’s be honest, eat a lot of them.

But I’ve also tried a new recipe that I got from that scrap booking friend of mine – it’s more Thanksgiving-y to my way of thinking, as it’s got a taste of pumpkin in it.  Pumpkin Snickerdoodles!

It took me two batches to get it right – mainly because I realized that my baking soda wasn’t doing what it was supposed to do.  Second time was a success, and tasted exactly as expected.

These two types of cookies will be traveling with me to a couple families (the third gets wine!), and I’m simultaneously hoping everyone loves them and eats them all, and that they don’t like them and I get to bring a large amount home with me.

At least I can be sure that no matter what the various family members think, I love the cookies I’m bringing!
