Recently, MM and I took a vacation away from it all to a cabin a few hours away. It’s an easy excuse to leave everything associated with our every day lives behind, and just be quiet for a while. Because the cabin we rent has a full kitchen, we don’t have to rely on restaurants the entire time we’re away. That’s nice, because sometimes you just want to stay inside, cozy by a fire, and not have to worry about where you’re going to get your next meal.
It also enables us to bring food or leftovers from home with us if we want something pretty quick. Enter this pulled pork recipe made in the slow cooker!
Slow-cooker Pulled Pork
Equipment
- Slow Cooker
- Cutting board
Ingredients
- 3 lbs pork sirloin roast
- Kosher salt
- Ground Black Pepper
- ½ c water
- 3 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp chili powder
- 2 c barbecue sauce plus more to serve
- 10 Kaiser buns optional
Instructions
- Season pork with salt and pepper, then place in the slow cooker. In a separate bowl, combine water, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and chili powder. Pour over pork.
- Cook on low 8-10 hours, or on high 4-5 hours.
- Remove the cooked pork to a cutting board, and discard the cooking liquid. Using two forks, shred the pork, and place back into the bowl of the slow cooker.
- Add barbecue sauce to the pork and stir to distribute. Place slow cooker on high, and cook for 30 minutes. Serve on Kaiser buns, or as desired.
This is a really, really easy recipe, one that you can set up in the slow-cooker and forget most of the day. Yes, there’s a little work to do before it’s done – shredding the meat with forks before the final stage – but it’s worth it. All you really need is a good, solid barbecue sauce that you and your family loves!
It’s okay to get two sirloin roasts if your grocery store doesn’t have a 3 pound-er available for you. Also, if you’re not planning on making this for a day or so, salt the roast when you get it home, and put it in the fridge until you’re ready.
You’re going to end up with quite a lot of pulled pork, and depending on your taste, the 2 cups of sauce you mix it with will be enough, or you may decide to add more when you’re ready to eat. If you’re like me, you’ll go for a wheat hamburger bun. If you’re like MM, you’ll throw it into a small bowl with some cheddar cheese, heat it a bit in the microwave to melt the cheese, and pair it with some tortilla chips.
To each their own!
And, just to make you all jealous, a picture of a sunset, taken on a windy evening – and I was definitely not dressed appropriately for the weather!
