So this was actually the first book that I read following the holidays. I’ve had it for a while, again from Book of the Month, and one that I had gotten months ago, but didn’t read because I wanted to get through my traditional Christmas books. The synopsis reads like many other books that I’ve enjoyed, and I thought might give me different perspective, given the fact that the author and the main character are so different than me. Spoilers ahead!
This book was not only a Goodreads Choice Winner for 2021, it was also a finalist for Book of the Month’s Book of the Year for 2021. I think I got it as an add-on with one of my monthly book selections – I’d heard that it was highly thought of, and while it wasn’t the first choice, I thought I would try it out.
Not going to lie – it took me a while to get into this. After flying through the first two books of the year, this one slowed me down a bit. I’m not entirely sure why. I didn’t immediately dislike any of the characters, and while a book set in the 80s feels weird, it wasn’t completely off-putting.
