So… What have I been up to?

You know, since I haven’t been here too often since March. To answer that question – work. Not all day every day, but enough so that I haven’t really had a ton of energy left to do new recipes, read as much as I would like, or get down to my craft room to do more than sigh in irritation at the mess. Plus, business travel is back on the table!

(Given the direction this post is going, if you’re bored by storytelling and organization, just skip this post and head over to my travel page – there you’ll find some fun content on trips that MM and I have taken!)

But recently, I’ve been doing some reorganizing. I blame the fact that the second season of Get Organized with The Home Edit released on Netflix. Yes, it’s somewhat ridiculous, yes, they can get annoying, and yes, the products they use are expensive. Still, it can be fun as background noise, and I’m a fan of the colors.

I originally got addicted last year with the first season, and again, it was annoying, but I had fun with it on in the background as I was doing other things. Unfortunately, it segued right into Marie Kondo’s show…

Why is that unfortunate? Well, maybe not too unfortunate – I ended up getting it in my head that it was time to go through all my clothes. So I followed her method of getting all of the clothing, shoes, jackets, scarves, everything, and putting it all on a bed to go through. The unfortunate part was how wrong I was in estimating how long it would take me to get through everything I owned… I was hoping that I could get through all of it in a few hours on a Saturday.

Hahahahahahahahaha!

It took me the entire weekend. You could interpret that in a couple ways. 1) I had a hard time figuring out what “sparked joy.” 2) I had way too much stuff to begin with.

You choose.

In any case, I accomplished a massive purge, changed the way I organized and folded my clothes, and was very happy with myself. And I kept up the change, too!

Recently, the second season of Get Organized came out, and once again, I was bitten by the organization bug. This time around, I ended up purging more of my clothing and moving things I had moved into a dresser last year back into my closet, enabling me to see what I had and therefore use more of it more consistently.

Through all of this, I grew increasingly irritated with the organization of my shoes.

I mean, there was an attempt, but it’s incredibly difficult to get into the little shoe boxes that I’m using to store sandal type shoes, and my ballet flats are just shoved on top of those boxes. It’s not very efficient or effective. Lots of wasted space.

(But hey, at least I made all my clothes into a rainbow…)

I ended up removing about 6 pairs of shoes that I just am not using any more (don’t worry, it’s all being donated, along with the clothing that I no longer need), so that helped. But then it was how I should contain them, and make it possible to store everything effectively. I ended up going with the type of shoe box that I had already used for the blue colorful shoes near the top of the tower. I’d also tried to get some smaller shelf type risers to put next to those shoe boxes, but the width of the tower made that impossible, as did putting two of those shoe boxes side by side.

I also arranged by color:

I learned a couple things in the process.

  1. I have a lot of black and nude color shoes – maybe it’s time for a change? 🙂
  2. I apparently like heels!
  3. I enjoy organizing by color – but I’m not going to do that to my books. That would just be insanity.

So, this is one thing that I’ve been up to lately. How about you?
