This was the third book I’ve read this year, starting out strong for my 50 book challenge. And I’m not thrilled with it.
To be honest, not a fan of the main character (such a doormat). Not a fan of her love interest (bizarrely perfect). Not a fan of the main character’s sisters (one of them is, quite frankly, a money grubbing thief while the other is a boyfriend stealing know-it-all). Not a fan of the main character’s mother (overbearing, and even though I’m reading into the tone, shrill).
At first, I felt compassion and empathy for the main character, who seemed to be focused on the needs of those around her. Many books I’ve read have a character like that, and as a reader, I feel for that person. Putting the needs of others before themselves, and usually that’s a very convenient challenge for the character to overcome. But for some reason, Wynn just really rubbed me the wrong way. As did the family that she was trying to focus on.
And her love interest, a rock star who decided to stop being a rock star to come back to his hometown, who just happens to be SOOOO perfect, who seems to completely understand her right off the bat. I have no problem suspending reality when it comes to romance novels, but this one was just a little too much for me.
Remember, this is coming from a woman who regularly reads Nora Roberts.
On Goodreads, this book got an average of 4 stars. I don’t get it. To be honest, the only reason I gave it 3 was the internal story about Wynn’s great grandmother, and the ending. But really, I should have lowered that to 2. Maybe I’m just trying to hold on to a modicum of optimism for upcoming books!
Wish me luck!
