Nine years ago, Vivienne Jones nursed her broken heart like any young witch would: vodka, weepy music, bubble baths…and a curse on the horrible boyfriend. Sure, Vivi knows she shouldn’t use her magic this way, but with only an “orchard hayride” scented candle on hand, she isn’t worried it will cause him anything more than a bad hair day or two. That is until Rhys Penhallow, descendent of the town’s ancestors, breaker of hearts, and…

I ended up choosing two books for October’s Book of the Month – one that will probably be a bit more thriller-ish, and this one.  After spending about a month reading a book that was pretty thought provoking, and, dare I say, depressing and dark, I needed something that was going to be light, fun, and fast.  After all, I need to get through my Goodreads challenge, and I’m really, really behind.  🙂  And so, I ended up reading The Ex Hex in about 2.5 days.  Potential Spoilers ahead…

Loved Vivienne, the main character, who knows what she’s about, even if she’s not super confident about it.  Rhys is, well, written really sexily, with enough angst that you end up forgiving his past transgressions as caused by his history.  And Gwyn and Elaine are perfect secondary characters, supporting Vivi, in every way she needs.  The only thing really missing from their relationship(s) was the lack of Vivi doing something wrong and having Gwyn or Elaine set her straight about it.

The reason I dropped down to 4 stars instead of 5 was because there are still some pieces that I just don’t understand.  What was the purpose of the ley lines?  Why did they need to be recharged?  What was the history between the two families ages ago?  Was it really only all about power?  What role did Rhys’s dad have when he’d come back to Graves Glen to charge the lines?  What was the magic that any of the witches performed over the span of the book?  How did Vivi learn anything?  What role do the three witches have in the town, other than the store and Vivi’s classes?

I missed some of that backstory – it wasn’t terribly detrimental, because I still enjoyed the book, but I feel like I would have enjoyed it even more if I had some of the motivations, or the ways that Vivi learned how to be a witch when her parents weren’t part of her life for so long.  How did she get to where she is now?

Full disclosure – there is a lot of cursing, and a LOT of sex.  You’ve been warned…  🙂  Enjoy!
