Slow Cooker BBQ Pulled Pork

MM loves barbecue pork, so when I found what seemed like a super easy recipe that I could put together before work and that would more than likely still be cooking when I home, I jumped at it.

Slow Cooker Barbecue Pulled Pork

Ingredients

  • 2.5-3 lb boneless pork shoulder or sirloin roast
  • 1/2 c water
  • 3 Tbsp cider vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp chili powder (or cumin)
  • 3 1/2 c barbecue sauce (or yield of BBQ sauce recipe below)
  • 10 kaiser rolls or hamburger buns, split

Directions

    1. Trim fat from meat.  If necessary, cut the meat so that it fits in the slow cooker.  In a small bowl, stir together water, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and chili powder. Pour mixture over meat in slow cooker.
    2. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours, or high for 4-5 hours.
    3. Remove meat from cooker, discarding cooking liquid.  Using two forks, pull meat apart into coarse shreds, discarding fat; return meat to slow cooker.  Stir in 2 cups of the Barbecue Sauce.  Turn slow cooker on high, cover and cook for 30 to 45 minutes, or until heated through.  Serve in rolls, and pass remaining sauce.

Homemade Barbecue Sauce Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 c ketchup
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 c packed dark brown sugar
  • 3 Tbsp cider vinegar
  • 3 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 tsp bottled hot pepper sauce

Homemade Barbecue Sauce Directions

Mix all ingredients in a medium saucepan.  Bring to boiling, then reduce heat.  Cover and simmer for 51 minutes, stirring occasionally. Use the sauce immediately, or cool slightly and transfer to a storage container.  Cover and chill for up to 3 days.

Work days can be long, you know? And there’s something about keeping the slow cooker on the “keep warm” setting bugs me a bit.

Anyway, this only requires a few ingredients, which is why it’s so easy to do before work. I’ve tried with both pork shoulder and sirloin. Either need to be boneless. The picture above is of sirloin.

Enjoy!
