After a devastating car accident, Nick whispers his last words to his wife, Mackenzie: “As soon as they know I’m dead, they’ll come after you.” Frightened and bewildered, Mackenzie travels to Philadelphia for the reading of her late husband’s will. To her shock, she learns that Nick’s mother, Cora, is not dead as he always claimed—rather, she is living as a recluse in the family’s gloomy nineteenth-century mansion. Desperate to understand why her husband lied…

I’m pretty sure I purchased this book as a freebie through Amazon, at least 5 years ago.  Looking back, I’m glad I got it for free.  This book is awful.  Once again, I can’t go into how I really feel about this book without talking about the details, so spoilers ahead.

It started out not too bad.  The intrigue that comes along with finding out that the husband has been lying to his wife about his family and history was interesting.  Finding out that he has a family is one thing – finding out that he’d inherited millions while indicating to his wife that he was a pauper is another.

And then there are the last words uttered by the husband.  “Find James.”

The book is set up to be pretty interesting!  And it immediately took a hard right turn due to one thing – the main character is an absolute idiot.

I’m going to be honest here.  It’s been a while since I finished this book.  All I can remember is my disgust with the main character and all the decisions that were made with the information she had.  I’ll also be honest and say that I skimmed a good solid chunk just to finish the end of it.  I can’t even tell you all the reasons I hated this book.  Just know that I hated it.

Reader beware – it’s awful.
